The IDSA’s 2012 guideline similarly recommends amoxicillin-clavulanate over amoxicillin by itself as the preferred initial choice for both children and adults, and prefers it over respiratory fluoroquinolones as well.

In practice, this means: even a doctor-confirmed bacterial sinus infection often doesn’t need an immediate prescription. Watching and waiting a few more days, while managing symptoms with supportive care like saline irrigation, is frequently the guideline-recommended first step — not a corner being cut.

Red flags that mean see a doctor now, not later
